2017: Costa Coffee shop

2007-present

The national chain Costa Coffee opened a branch here in 2007, occupying 141-145 Cowley Road. It was the first in a wave of coffee shops opening on Cowley Road which replaced old shops around this time, and was seen as an ominous sign by some local residents.

On 16 August 2007, The Oxford Mail reported on a campaign launched in opposition to its opening:

"A guerilla Internet campaign has been launched, aimed at closing the newly-opened Costa Coffee shop in Oxford's Cowley Road... The group, called Get ******* Costa Coffee off the Cowley Road, was started by East Oxford resident Anthony Henry, who said: "I'm sick of the amount of corporate rubbish that is replacing the small, quirky shops once in abundance in Cowley Road. "The face of Cowley is being changed and it will soon be just an extension of town." "

It was the local branch of 'Barclays Bank' from 1932 until the early 2000s. After Barclays closed it was the Save the Children offices. It was once the home of Samuel Grafton, sculptor.[1]
