Updating instructions for adding images
== Adding images ==
# Go to the [[Special:Upload | FileUpload page]] to upload one, or several images.# You will be invited to name the image. Please include the street number, and the date if possible, in the image filename. It's important that images are named correctly, in this format:HowToPageImageButtonstreetNumber-year-month-day.JPG|frame|To add fileformat. For example, an imageof the Excelsior cafe in 1972 (address: 250 Cowley Road) should be named: 250-1972.png# In the description, cick on this icon when you are in give the name of the copyright holder (the person who took the Edit viewimage), and specify what license it is to be published under.See the [[Copyright | Copyright page]]to understand the options. # Finally, insert the image into the relevant page. For example, to put the Excelsior cafe image into the page for 250 Cowley Road, go to https://www.cowleyroad.org/wiki/index.php?title=250
'''Warning: Once you MUST hold are on the copyright for any images you upload''' (ieright page, click Edit tab, switch to Wikitext editor, have created then add the image yourself). The only exception is for open licensed images where you understand the copyright. If in doubt, do not upload them!file using this format:
Please ensure your images are no more than 600px wide in their largest dimension before uploading them<nowiki>[[File:mypicture. Then, go to the page where you want to add the image and click the Edit tab. When you are in the Edit view click on the small 'image' icon (this is illustrated in the image to the right). A pop up box will appear. In the 'Image filename' field, type the name you want your image to have. This should preferably include the address number, and the date when it was made. In the bottom left of the pop up box there is a 'Special Type' field - click here and select 'Frame' from the dropdown list. (This will ensure the image is aligned neatly to the right of the page.) You should also add a caption in the 'png|frame| Caption' field, again including the date and a brief description. Then click 'OK'. In the normal page view you will then see your image name appear in red. Click on this and it will take you to a form where you can upload your image. Once uploaded, when you navigate back to the page you should see your image.text]]</nowiki>
For the Excelsior image, this would mean you type: <nowiki>[[File:250-1972.png|frame| This image shows the Excelsior cafe in its heyday in 1972]]</nowiki> Save your changes, and the image should now appear in a frame to the right of the page, with a caption. Lovely! ==Assigning images to pages== There are usually some images on the wiki which have been uploaded, but not yet used on a page, so they are unlikely to be seen by people browsing the website.A good job for wiki volunteers is to regularly check the [[Special:UnusedFiles|list of unused files]] and either insert them into a page (instructions above), or if they are a duplicate, to delete them.
== Understanding copyright ==
If you do not know what Wiki Markup is, you can happily ignore this section. If you prefer to use Wikitext instead of the standard edit interface, you will be using Wiki Markup which means that you will see some extra characters in amongst the text when you edit it. This consists of normal characters like asterisks, apostrophes or equal signs which have a special function in the wiki, sometimes depending on their position. For example, to format a word in ''italic'', you include it in two pairs of apostrophes like
<nowiki>''this''</nowiki>

To add an image to a page in the Wikitext editor, type this:
<nowiki>[[File:myImage.png|frame| Caption text]]</nowiki>

Please include the street number, and the date if possible, in the image filename. For example, to upload an image of the Excelsior cafe in 1972 (address: 250 Cowley Road) you would type:

<nowiki>[[File:250-1972.png|frame| This image shows the Excelsior cafe in its heyday in 1972]]</nowiki>
